Cooper - America's Top Dog Model 2014 National Finalist
February is National Pet Dental Health Month. Dental health is so important to pet's overall health that a whole month has been devoted to this topic. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats are diagnosed with oral health issues by the age of three.
This is not the time to be the yellow fellow with doggie breath! It is the time to evaluate your pooch and decide how to keep teeth clean and healthy. The best option in helping to ensure your pet's dental health is through regular teeth brushing. Veterinarians advise brushing daily or at least three times a week.
Here are 5 pet dental health tips for a healthy winning smile:
1. For first time brushing, it's best to apply a little toothpaste to your finger to allow your pet to get a taste. Use only toothpaste meant for dogs. Then proceed, praising as you brush in a circular motion. Be sure to brush near the gum line, where plaque tends to build up.
2. Finger brushes that fit over your finger tip are another option for keeping teeth clean. Your dog may prefer this over a traditional toothbrush.
3. Set up a schedule to help keep track of tooth brushing.
4. In addition, provide your dog with natural chews, treats, bones, and toys (such as hemp or cotton chew ropes). Although these options should not be provided in lieu of brushing, they do encourage chewing, and help fight plaque.
5. If you are still having trouble, request a demonstration from your vet on how to properly brush your pet's teeth and ask for recommendations on which dental products to use.
Healthy teeth are paramount to your pet’s overall health, longevity and if you desire to get your dog booked for a toothpaste commercial.
