May is National Barbecue Month. Barbecues offer endless possibilities to fire up your favorite dishes with family and friends while kicking off the summer season. And there's nothing more inviting than food cooking on the grill. But let's not forget our furry-family members. A fantastic way to include them in all the fun, is to Invite your close friends and their well-behaved pups over for a Backyard Bark-B-Q. This year, of course, it's recommended to keep gatherings small. But, even if you're hosting a small party, thoughtful details can make your event memorable.

This ultimate relaxed get-together will set the tone for a dog day filled with fun doggy races, fetch, and staying cool in the puppy pool. Humans can keep cool with a frosty beverage and this beautiful, handcrafted palm leaf hand fan. known as Buri fans, these natural fans will not only keep guests cool but also add the perfect tropical detail to your summer soiree.

Details matter even for outdoor entertaining. Set the table with a colorful tablecloth, matching paper plates, and America's Top Dog Model twelfth anniversary beverage napkins! Fill a tin tub with ice for chilled beverages and watering cans with wildflowers.

Grilled foods are always the centerpiece for any backyard barbecue. Canine tails will wag for hot dogs and hamburgers (unseasoned). Other typical barbecue foods that your dog can eat include carrots (without dressing) from the veggie tray, sliced watermelon (without seeds or rind), cheese, and sweet potatoes.

There are, however, several foods typically found at a barbecue that should be kept away from dogs because they are toxic or harmful. You should never let a dog have:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine (tea, cola, etc.)
  • Onions and garlic
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Chocolate
  • Bones

If these foods are served at the barbecue, you should let your friends know that your dog absolutely cannot have these (another reason to suggest that guests bring their dog's food). It’s a good idea to have your dog eat before the barbecue starts. This way your pup will be less tempted. Also, be sure all doggies have plenty of water and access to shade. With all the details in place, grab a cold drink, put on the music, and fire up the grill.
